Arguably, the food industry is the most important factor to any economy; the health and welfare of any culture is heavily dependent on food sources and the world would simply not work if the industry suddenly disappeared.
To ensure that the food industry keeps turning, there are so many people in food jobs such as technologists, buyers, manufacturers and processors. This means that there is always demand for such jobs and the food industry is one where so many people could aim to build their career, and it doesn’t have to end with industry jobs; there are also the likes of food jobs in schools, universities and even the government.
Whatever career in food you might want to aim for, it is important that the consumer is always in their mind’s eye and that everything is done within their power to create a product that meets its purpose.
Decisions, decisions, decisions
As with most careers, a job in the food industry needs to be appropriate to the path you wish your career to progress in. Although, it is important not to get single-minded about a single area, but look to also develop knowledge on other elements in the industry in order to expand your appeal to employers.
Think about what you would like out of your job, and more specific to this field, consider what environment you wish to work in and what type of work do you wish to be involved with. Do you see yourself working in a laboratory, or would you prefer being more active and on your feet? Does analytical work excite you or are you more motivated by practical tasks?
Impressing the recruiters
Those graduating straight from university or college need to be thoroughly passionate about learning new things and developing your understanding of the industry, whether it is formally or on your own time. Secure employment will be further supported if you have a specialised qualification, which will mean you can offer specialist knowledge to recruiters and makes it looks as you have a clear focus and discipline towards a certain sector.
As with any job, you need to get your passion of the industry across to the employer and explain to them how excited you are about working in an area you love. Remember, the food industry is a place where you can work on a product for several months in order to have the satisfaction of seeing on the shelf in the supermarket for the public to purchase; these are elements you need to convey to the recruiter.
In the long term
The prospects in the food industry are generally very positive and a job can set you up for a long time indeed. Food manufacturers indicate that the average duration employees stick with them is around nine years, backing a very high level of stability.
Wages generally start just at just over £20,000 a year and can rise to anything just inside six figures for the senior positions. Those with previous experience will be able to start on more, but ongoing training throughout your career will help you move up the ladder and develop your career in food at a brisk pace.
