We all know that looking for a job in the current “challenging” economic times can be a pretty difficult task. The media is filled with gloom and doom stories – from the increases in the numbers of people claiming unemployment benefit through to the increases in the numbers of people applying for every job that is advertised. In fact, our own local newspaper recently reported a case where over 2000 people had applied for 14 jobs with a new retailer. A frightening statistic indeed! The reality is though that in spite of the difficult job market and the incessant doom-mongering by the media, it is vitally important that you stay positive when job searching. So, with that in mind, here are our Top Tips for ” How to Stay Positive when Job Searching.”
Limit your Job Search
Whilst your entire focus right now may be on searching for a job, the reality is that the longer you spend doing that without success, the more disillusioned and downbeat you are likely to get.It is much better to limit your job search activities to specific scheduled times. Rather than sitting in front of your computer for hours on end, constantly hitting refresh on the job boards, it would be much better to devote a dedicated period of time to doing this every day. Imposing a structure to your job search will not only help you stay focused but will also help bring back a sense of routine to your days which often can disappear once you are no longer working.
Look after yourself
Looking after yourself should be a priority right now. If you have been through a redundancy situation or have continually had knockbacks and rejections from jobs you have applied for, your self esteem will undoubtedly have taken a hit. That is why it is critical to ensure that you look after yourself properly. Proper sleep, exercise and relaxation will all play a part in helping you stay refreshed, keeping stress at bay and in turn remaining both physically and emotionally capable.
Do what you enjoy
The one thing that is a real luxury when you are working is of course spare time. And that is something which you now have at your disposal. Make sure you use it wisely. If you have a hobby or pastime that you have been neglecting, then make amends now. Whether it is a sporting activity or a craft that you enjoy then take some time out to get back in the swing of it. This will not only will this improve your mindset and help you stay positive, but will also help distract you from any potentially negative thinking.
If you cannot secure any paid employment, then doing voluntary work can be one of the best things that you can do. Volunteering will improve your employability and your skills and may potentially open entirely new windows of opportunity for you. Remember too that prospective employers will always be impressed with candidates who actually use their “ between jobs” time constructively like this as opposed to simply sitting around doing nothing.
Okay – admittedly a blanket ban on negativity may be pretty impossible. After all, you can’t control what the newspapers say or what negative stories get reported on TV or radio. There are however some things which you can control. Try and keep your more “optimistic” friends and family around you as opposed to the “merchants of doom.” Being with positive thinking people will have a knock on effect on you too. If you feel that you are starting to get down, then speak to someone about it. A problem shared is a problem halved as they say. Trying to think positively may take a concerted effort at times but it will pay off in the end much more than sitting dwelling on all the negatives.
