Where a job in insurance could take you

Businessman Using ComputerIt might not scream glamour like some professions, but insurance jobs can be much more interesting and varied than you might initially think.

Insurance is a part of almost everything we do – celebrities, bars and festivals all need insurance as do cars, planes, holidays and even our homes. With all the variables in the world that can affect insurance, related career opportunities are never dull, but just where could they take you?

Insurance needs innovative thinkers

Working with numbers and people, insurance professionals are there to protect the finances of individuals and companies in the wake of an unexpected event. This means no two days are ever the same, as you are constantly being confronted with new challenges. Insurance jobs therefore rely on innovative thinkers who can react to an ever-changing environment.

Whatever your skills, there’s a role for you

The insurance industry offers a wide variety of jobs which vary depending on the qualifications and experiences required. Whether you’re good at writing, numeracy or have a business or nursing degree, there’s a job for you.

Some roles deal with sales, others in business-to-business relationships while more ‘behind the scenes’ positions include claims management, underwriting and risk management. No matter what your background, you can find a niche in the insurance industry.

A career that’s going places

In this tough economic climate, many people are thinking outside the box when it comes to employment. Although it might not be an avenue you have considered before, insurance jobs offer much more than you may think.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI), who has over 300 members which represent 90% of the UK insurance market, revealed that the insurance market contributed 26% of the UK’s total net worth in 2011. In real terms, this amounts to a staggering £1.8 trillion and demonstrates just how important the insurance industry is.

Over the course of your career, you can work across a wide variety of areas and change direction as you progress and evolve. In uncertain times, insurance jobs can offer the security and growth that many other industries can’t and this is a really attractive feature.

Of course, competition is still fierce and a report from this year claims the finance and insurance industries employ a collective 1.1 million people in the UK alone. This means those interested in insurance jobs must battle against a large number of fellow applicants to secure a foothold in one of the most progressive industries around.
