How to Answer “What Motivates You?” – TheEmployable Interview Tips

In order to make the best impression on the interviewer, you should try and tailor your answer to the particular role you have applied for. For example, stating that you are motivated most by the satisfaction you get from helping other people would be a worthwhile answer for an interview with a charitable organisation, but perhaps less so for a highly driven sales role. Spend some time thinking about what the employer would want to be a driving force for one of its’ employees and adapt your answer accordingly.

Positive words
When thinking about and describing what motivates you in a work environment, you should always aim to use positive words and examples – how you enjoy helping others, succeeding in achieving targets, mentoring or coaching other people, the satisfaction you get from solving a problem, receiving recognition for your efforts and ideas. Motivators such as these will be appealing to an interviewer as they reflect attributes and traits which will in turn benefit them as a prospective employer.

  1. Another potential example I have used within successful interviews when asked this question is that motivation comes from an intrinsic association between your work and the idea of the self. Essentially, due to your up-bringing, you feel that your work is a direct reflection upon you; bad work will detract from your personal pride and good work will validate it.

    Therefore what you are saying is that you will always strive to perform your duties to the highest standard simply because it’s ‘natural’ for you to do so. You will naturally seek to do a good job.

    By all means you can then add something specific but I find this argument appears to appeal to many an interviewer. It’s essentially a self-sustaining motivator.
