So, it’s coming up to that time of year again for many. Final exams lie ahead, followed by hopefully good results and then the long awaited graduation. But what happens next?
For many students the last few years may have simply flown by without them having to spend much time thinking about the future. First year rolls into second year and then third year and so on. But once you’ve donned that cap and gown and received your degree or diploma, what are your options then?
Well, there are a few that you can consider:
Enter The Workplace
This may of course seem like a logical next step, and of course the thought of finally earning money after all those years as a poor student is no doubt attractive, but as we all know in the current economic climate, getting a job is not always that easy.
Start a Business
Don’t assume that this is an easy option if you can’t find a job. The road to entrepreneurship is a difficult one and you really need to think carefully about your business idea. Do you have the skills needed to succeed? Can you secure the funding ? Do you have a viable business plan? If the answer is no, then your business unfortunately may not succeed.
Gap Year Travel
The thought of a year away exploring new cultures in exotic climes is of course an appealing one. But, whilst you may gain new perspectives on things, will this add any real value to your CV when you start looking for a job again, a year from now?
Further Study
Staying on in further education is becoming an increasingly popular option for many students. With an increasingly competitive jobs market, many graduates are realising that developing their transferable skills is one of the best ways that they can differentiate themselves from other candidates out there.
One of the best examples of this is the London Business School’s Masters in Management programme. With regards to career benefits specifically, the programme will :
– have an immediate positive career impact, by providing you with a thorough grounding in business fundamentals, no matter what your undergraduate discipline, and that will certainly help you stand out from the graduate crowd
– prove to be an investment that really pays off. In fact 96% of graduates had accepted offers of employment within 3 months of graduation.
– strengthen your personal skills and help you develop the maturity, self awareness and a new sense of perspective to be able to make smart informed choices about your future
– mean that you are graduating with a top tier brand on your CV
The MIM programme will also enable you to build an invaluable network of contacts – from fellow students, professional and social clubs, international alumni and recruiters, including A.T. Kearney, Citi, L’Oreal, RBS, London stock ~Exchange, UBS, KPMG, Bain & company and HSBC.
As Julia Marsh, Executive Director of the Masters in Management programme says, :
“ Studying in London Business School’s eclectic, close-knit community presents an unparalleled global networking opportunity. Whether receiving mentoring from an MBA student, joining a professional club or interacting with our 34,000 strong alumni network, you build enviable contacts while living in one of the world’s greatest cities.”
If you want to hear some recent alumni talk about their experience on the programme and how it enabled them to excel in their chosen careers upon graduation, check out this video link.
The MIM itself is a full time 12 month programme with one annual intake each September. The next intake is September 2012 and you should click here if you would like some more details of the programme itself.
