How to Answer “Why do you want to work here?” TheEmployable Interview Tips

Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes
Think about it for a moment. If you were the interviewer , what would you want to hear? Would you be impressed with a sycophantic response, that doesn’t appear genuine? Or would you prefer to hear about how you could benefit from hiring this particular candidate? It’s really all about balance. Most candidates will give the answer that they think the interviewer wants to hear – reeling off all the wonderful reasons why this job and this company are just perfect. The reality is that the interviewer really wants a balanced answer. Yes, they want to hear about how great they are, but they equally need to hear about how great you are. Doing both these things can put you in a much stronger position compared to other candidates.

Finally….Don’t always tell the truth!
Whilst of course we would never condone lying in an interview, sometimes being too honest can do you more harm than good. For example if you answer by saying , you just need a job, any job, whilst this may be unfortunately true, it is not what an interviewer wants to hear. Yes, they may sympathise with your situation and even sense your desperation if that is the case. However they will not necessarily feel that you are the right candidate for them. Answering like this does not in any way show that you really care about this job or this company. And that is what they want in a prospective employee. They want to feel that you really want the job with them, not that you will take anything that comes along.

  1. Good article. I always like to hear about what the person can bring to the role in question. Too often candidates talk about what they can get and what they want, as opposed to taking the opportunity to highlight the skills that they will bring to the organisation.

  2. Good article. Without a prepared, focused answer candidates tend to babble on and can’t find a way to end. This is a great opportunity to deliver your “you aked for, I have it” scenario. As a coach, I help people prepare for these open ended questions. A tip: if you demonstrate your skill in context, you wil be ready to deliver a great final line and end with the impact it had on the organization. You may see the hiring manager making a note. That’s usualy a good sign.
