How to Answer “Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?” TheEmployable Interview Tips

Don’t get personal
You should always focus your answer on your professional or career goals. An interviewer does not need to know your personal ambitions, so your plans for starting a family or buying a house should be left out of the interview room. Your answer should highlight to the interviewer exactly what your career objectives are and how this role in this company is going to help you achieve them.

Show Commitment
Always remember that you are in the interview seat as the company has a vacancy which requires filling. And what they want to hear from you is that you want to fill that vacancy and be committed to it and to them for the foreseeable. They do not want to hear that it is a stop gap for you until something better comes along, or that you are simply using it as a stepping stone. You need to display to the interviewer that you want this position for all the right reasons.

Know your goals
If you haven’t already thought about your medium and long term career goals and objectives, then you should start. Responding to the interviewer with a vague “I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it yet” is not going to win you any favours. By asking this question, an interviewer is keen to find out if you have a definitive career plan, so that they can fully determine if it fits in with their own objectives for a potential employee. Devote some time before your interview to work out exactly what your own career goals are so that you can answer this well enough to impress the interviewer.
